Sunday 3rd February - walk ***** – Felixstowe Ferry – Deben Path - sunny.

After yesterday’s epic 7-mile walk, we were keen to make the most of a crisp clear Sunday. Wanting to avoid the crowds on the prom I decided to drive to Felixstowe Ferry and walk along the Deben river path with my big lens on in search of some Bearded Tits:) We parked up near the chapel at 1.30 and set off past the house boats and out onto the muddy sea wall path. The tide was fairly low and there were a few Red Shanks but as soon as we got near, they flew off! There was no sign of any geese or Bearded Tits in the sedges on the dykes but then a couple of small brown birds were feeding in the grass near us and I managed to get some nice pics and we think they were a pair of Stone Chats:) There was also some Pippits but they move fast so it was a job to get a pic. As we approached King’s Fleet, we spotted large numbers of Brent Geese which could not settle, and flew in circles above us in large v’s. First landing in the Deben then in the farmers field before moving on again! We reached the landing stage for Felixstowe water ski club which we used as our turning point and was two miles from the van. We walked back on the lower path close to the reeds but there were not many small birds about. We saw the odd swan and curlew but little else. It was still a lovely 2.5 hour walk in the winter sunshine covering 4 miles. Some mates have had an epic couple of days in El Medano (Tenerife) Sat. 5.7 and Sun. 4.2 and as I haven’t been windsurfing since January 13th, I am keen to get out in February before we head off to the mountains in search of some snow and tomorrow is looking sailable but later in the week is looking really good, becoming much milder too:)
